Meet Loren.
From Courtroom to Craftsman
For 38 years, I was a trial attorney and very much enjoyed representing individuals against insurance companies. While I had many successful outcomes and happy clients, my work ultimately did not fulfill my interest in producing a physical end result. I was craving to create using my hands.
Prior to retiring, I went on a kayak trip where I was introduced to a beautiful cedar strip kayak. I figured I had spare time now in my retirement, so why not build one? After plenty of trial and error, I figured it out and realized the boats I made were actually quite good! I began providing boats to friends and family and to charity auctions.
Expanding My Craft
I soon came to have more boats than I could use and donate. Still feeling the need to express my emergent artistic talents, I began to look for a different medium to satisfy my desire to create.
Living in the lush Pacific Northwest, surrounded by forests and oceans, I realized that these influences could be expressed through the abundant live edge hardwood of the region and the unique beauty of epoxy resin. My hardwood river tables and wall art emerged from these stunning, natural influences.
Bridging Two Landscapes
Splitting my time between the lush Pacific Northwest and the rugged beauty of Baja California Sur has further influenced my work. I now incorporate elements from both the Sonoran Desert and the Pacific Ocean into my hardwood creations, resulting in pieces that tell a story of two distinct yet harmonious landscapes.
My journey from lawyer to woodworker has been one of discovery and passion. Each piece I create is a testament to the natural beauty that surrounds us and the joy of bringing that beauty into new homes.
We at the Clark County Volunteer Lawyers Program have been familiar with Loren for years in his capacity as a beloved attorney and champion for equal access to justice in Washington. It was especially exciting when Loren approached us to participate in the CCVLP's 2024 Art Auction Fundraiser as one of our featured artists. Loren provided us with 3 absolutely stunning and original works of art composed of wood, resin, and other materials. His pieces include visually interesting designs and shapes that create an organic feel to the layout, intermingled with the incredibly stunning blue resin that is mixed throughout. His art was a hit amongst CCVLP staff and art auction attendees! We look forward to working with Loren again and to seeing what he comes up with in the future.
